HONG KONG, Aug. 11, 2026 — The Hong Kong AI International Film Festival Association announced today that the first group of partners in the Hong Kong AI Film Market has completed transactions covering 101 AI-made and AI-related film titles, with aggregate deal value exceeding US$12 million.
The figures represent the first at-scale commercial results for films made with artificial intelligence — evidence, the association said, that AI cinema is moving from viral novelty to a functioning market. The Hong Kong AI Film Market, which organizers describe as the world’s first dedicated to trading rights in AI-made screen works, was registered in 2025, built over fifteen months and launched in July 2026 during the Hong Kong AI International Film Festival.
The results were announced alongside the launch of HKAIIFF PARTNER, a cooperation program that organizes participants into four tracks: Strategic Partners for production technology, original IP and research; Transaction Partners linking projects to rights institutions and professional film markets; Distribution and Channel Partners; and Regional Operating Partners building local creator centers with cities and institutions.
From streaming to 35,000 feet
The distribution destinations reported by the association reach well beyond cinemas and streaming. Channel partners are assembling curated slates for television, subscription and ad-supported platforms, FAST channels, airline in-flight entertainment, hotel networks, museums and education platforms — non-theatrical windows with sustained demand for short-form, multilingual, rights-clear content. The association noted that a film a traveler watches in flight or in a hotel room may increasingly be one made largely with AI, as these windows are precisely where AI production’s multi-version, multi-language capability fits.
Building on a distribution footprint spanning 56 countries and territories across six continents, the association said rights trading will now expand worldwide. Partner names and title lists will be disclosed in stages under confidentiality and joint-release arrangements.
Verifiable deals amid a global debate
The results arrive amid intense global discussion of AI’s role in filmmaking — from the labor disputes that halted Hollywood production in 2023, to the U.S. Copyright Office’s position that protected works require sufficient human authorship, to European Union transparency rules for AI-generated content that took effect this month.
The market’s approach is to trade only around verifiable records. Each transacted title carries documentation of how it was made and the extent of AI involvement, disclosed under the festival’s “51%-plus AI involvement” standard, which distinguishes works merely assisted by AI from those in which AI drives the core creative process.
“What the first transactions show is that buyers are not paying for an AI label,” a festival spokesperson said. “They are paying for finished storytelling with clear rights, clear versions and a place in front of audiences. The next phase for AI cinema is making valuable works reliably discoverable, understandable and usable.”
