Alstom completes delivery of 106 new trains for Singapore's North-South and East-West MRT lines

SINGAPORE, Sept. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, today announced the successful delivery of the last new train for the ongoing renewal of Singapore’s North-South and East-West MRT Lines (NSEWL). The handover completes a major fleet replacement programme that will support reliable, accessible and more sustainable public transport in Singapore. Sustainability has been embedded throughout the trains’ design, with nearly 100% of recyclable material used.

The new fleet comprises 636 metro cars, forming 106 trains, and replacing previous generation vehicles. They are operated on two of Singapore’s most heavily used rail corridors. Designed for high-capacity urban operations, the trains will support the continued performance of the North-South and East-West Lines and enhance the passenger experience across the network.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority awarded Alstom the initial contract for 66 Movia trains in 2018, followed by an additional order for 40 trains in 2019. The 106 trains were manufactured by Changchun Alstom Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd. in Changchun, China. The programme brought together Alstom teams in Singapore, China, Germany and Sweden, working closely with the Land Transport Authority and rail operator SMRT Trains.

High capacity and performance trains incorporating latest Alstom components

Built on Alstom’s Movia metro platform, which is part of the Metropolis metro solutions, the new trains combine high passenger capacity with efficient operation and improved lifecycle performance. Each six-car train has 220 seats and can operate at speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour.

The trains feature energy-efficient Flexx Urban bogies, Mitrac propulsion systems and regenerative braking. Step-free boarding and flexible multipurpose spaces improve accessibility, while the longitudinal seating layout supports passenger flow and maximises capacity on the high-volume network.

Automatic track inspection cameras installed on the fleet support more efficient infrastructure condition monitoring. By collecting information during regular operations, the cameras can help identify track conditions and support timely maintenance planning.

Supporting resource-efficient urban mobility

Sustainability has been embedded throughout the trains’ design. Approximately 95% of the materials used are recyclable, while more than 96% are recoverable at the end of the trains’ service life.^[1]

The trains also incorporate design-for-disassembly principles, allowing materials and components to be separated more efficiently at end of life. This supports resource recovery, contributes to the circular use of materials and reduces the fleet’s overall environmental impact.
