TAIPEI, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Known locally as "Bo-Bing" (The Dice Game for Mooncakes), Kinmen’s traditional Mid-Autumn dice game boasts a rich history spanning over 300 years. Legend has it that Bo-Bing originated with General Hong Xu, a commander under Zheng Chenggong, who was born in Hongmen Port (later Houfeng Port) in Kinmen. During Zheng’s campaign against Nanjing, in order to maintain the morale of troops left behind in Xiamen and ease their homesickness, he devised the dice game of Bo-Bing, played during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The game later spread throughout Xiamen, Quanzhou, Kinmen, and beyond.
Despite a history spanning over 300 years, the Bo-Bing tradition temporarily vanished during Kinmen’s military administration period. To resurrect this intangible cultural heritage and drive regional tourism, the Kinmen County Government revived the "The Dice Game for Mooncakes(Bo-Bing) on Mid-Autumn Festival." Today, the festival is officially recognized by the Tourism Administration, MOTC, as a National-Level Event on the Taiwan Tourism Biennial Calendar.
Running from September 1 to September 25, this year’s festival transforms the entire island into a massive Bo-Bing playground. Anchored by the 300-year-old tradition, the event links major landmarks—including the Kinmen Military Headquarters of the Qing Dynasty, Jinsha Theater, and Everrich Golden Lake Plaza—the five participating and over 130 participating businesses. The comprehensive lineup features cultural experiences, Champion Parade, Spend & Grab Fun, Township Bo-Bing Competition, and Online Bo-Bing. Furthermore, the festival integrates a charitable initiative: visitors can donate their shopping receipts to local charities, contributing to the community while trying their luck for the holiday.
