Key Points

  • Nearly 5 million people celebrated Songkran in Bangkok 2026, a 93.4% increase from 2025, with top venues Siam Square (1.5 million), Iconsiam (1.47 million), and Silom Road (652,974). The festival saw 20 road fatalities, 85% involving motorcyclists, many without helmets; Thung Khru and Prawet districts faced the most deaths.

  • Waste generation surged to 336 tonnes, surpassing last year’s 250.5 tonnes, with Khao San Road producing the most (102.46 tonnes). Enhanced event coordination, zoning, and inter-agency cooperation contributed to record attendance and vibrant festival atmosphere amid persistent safety and environmental challenges.

  • The Tourism Authority of Thailand projects over 30.35 billion baht in tourism revenue from Songkran 2026, driven by 500,000 foreign visitors and 5.96 million domestic trips. However, economic factors like rising diesel prices have led some forecasts to be more cautious, despite strong international interest shown in flagship events like Maha Songkran.

The 2026 Songkran festival in Bangkok witnessed an unprecedented surge in attendance, with nearly 5 million people participating—a 93.4% increase from the previous year’s 2.56 million. This remarkable growth parallels broader national trends of rising domestic and international tourism, enhanced event coordination, and the festival’s expanding role as both a cultural phenomenon and an economic catalyst. Key venues such as Siam Square (1.5 million visitors), Iconsiam (1.47 million), and Silom Road (652,974) emerged as major hubs, augmented by flagship events like the Maha Songkran World Water Festival at Benjakitti Park, which attracted over 108,000 attendees, including more than 52,000 foreigners. Enhanced planning, clearer zoning, and improved inter-agency cooperation in Bangkok significantly contributed to managing this record turnout.

Despite the vibrant celebratory atmosphere, the festival highlighted persistent challenges, particularly in road safety and environmental impact. There were 20 reported fatalities in 18 road accidents during the festivities, with an alarming 85% (17 deaths) involving motorcyclists, nine of whom were not wearing helmets. The districts of Thung Khru and Prawet experienced the highest fatalities, recording three and two deaths, respectively. On the environmental front, waste generation soared to 336 tonnes across major Songkran sites, a substantial increase from the previous year’s 250.5 tonnes. Khao San Road alone accounted for the highest waste volume with more than 102 tonnes collected, underscoring the ecological strain accompanying mass gatherings.

Economically, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) projects that the Songkran 2026 festival will generate approximately 30.35 billion baht in tourism revenue—a 6% increase from 2025. Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributed this growth to the influx of about 500,000 foreign visitors, who contributed 8.1 billion baht, alongside 5.96 million domestic tourists generating 22.25 billion baht. While TAT remains optimistic about these financial outcomes, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has moderated spending forecasts for the festival to 120–125 billion baht nationwide, factoring in economic caution and rising diesel prices. Regardless of these cautious estimations, the overwhelming participation at primary venues attests to Songkran’s enduring appeal and its significant role in Thailand’s social and economic landscape.
