Thailand Expects Chinese New Year Travel Boost

Thailand is set to see a surge in Chinese tourists in May as Chinese airlines plan to increase their flights to the country. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has received requests from Chinese airlines to raise their weekly flights from 100 to 430. This is welcome news for the Thai tourism industry, which has been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. China is Thailand’s largest source of foreign visitors, accounting for around 28% of arrivals in 2019. However, due to travel restrictions and border closures, the number of Chinese tourists dropped by 83% in 2020. The increase in flights will help boost tourism, but limited capacity at Suvarnabhumi airport may impact operations. Ground handling operators are currently at 40% capacity due to staff and equipment shortages.
